On the Design of Involute Splined Couplings.

PhD. Transactions of Machine Elements Division. Lund 1993

Abstract:

Involute splined couplings are the subject of this work. The geometry of the coupling is described, and a new design is suggested in order to avoid pressure peaks along the boundaries of contact. This new design involves relief and crowning of the teeth. The pressure distribution between the cooperating teeth of the shaft and the hub was calculated and used in calculation of the maximum contact pressure and the maximum allowed torque for a given geometry. The maximum tensile stress and the maximum equivalent stress were also calculated.

Two experiments were carried out in order to verify the theoretical results. In the first test, the effect of relief was studied using a photoelastic model, while in the second the strains of the fillet surface of the shaft were measured and compared with the calculated strains. The agreement between calculation and test is satisfactory.
