Abstract:

In this work special attention is directed to the calculation of power losses in V-belt drives. Losses due to friction between belt and pulley are divided into losses occurring during power transmission and losses when the belt enters and leaves the pulley. Hysteresis losses due to internal friction are measured.

An optimum rule is given which implies that a certain combination of transmitted power and pre-tension minimizes the power loss factor (relative power loss).

Experimental investigations of no-load losses and efficiency are in good agreement with the theoretical results.

  • Pressure distribution and belt deformation in V-belt drives. Transactions of Machine Elements Division. Lund 1973.

Abstract:

In this paper the pressure distribution across a V-belt and the radial deformation have been investigated. Diagrams show the influence of cord stiffness, coefficient of friction, and difference in groove angle. It appears that large pressure variations occur on the sides of the belt. The compressive modulus of elasticity of the cord has a large influence on both the side pressure and the radial deformation. A proposed relation between belt force and radial displacement is confirmed by the numerical results. The relation considers the direction of the frictional forces. Calculated belt constants are in accordance with the experimental results.
