Abstract:

The contact force for a hydrodynamic lip seal is calculated by means of the finite element method. The seal is optimized with regard to power loss and sealing capacity and the necessity of full hydrodynamic lubrication is taken into account. Tests were made with both unidirectional and bedirectional seals. With regard to the fact that these test seals were standard seals with film profiles that certainly deviate from the theoretical optimum film profile, the agreement between theoretical and experimental power loss is satisfactory.
